Hello everyone, I'm Keko, one of the online staff members.
This blog usually focuses on Uji tea, sharing ways to enjoy it at various times of the day, in different methods, and with creative arrangements. But today, I’d like to shift the focus to highlight something broader under the theme of “What Japanese Tea Can Do, and What Can Be Done for Japanese Tea.” I’ll introduce you to a remarkable farming method from Shizuoka Prefecture that has been recognized as a UNESCO World Agricultural Heritage: Chagusaba Farming.
What Makes Chagusaba Farming Special?
Chagusaba Farming, which translates to “tea-grass field farming,” is a distinctive practice where farmers grow grasslands near tea fields. The grass is harvested and used to mulch the tea fields, offering numerous benefits:
Enhanced Tea Quality: The mulch improves soil health, contributing to the production of high-quality tea leaves.
Biodiversity Conservation: The surrounding grasslands serve as habitats for various plant and animal species, supporting a rich ecosystem.
Environmental Sustainability: By maintaining these grasslands, farmers help protect the local environment while ensuring the longevity of their tea fields.
Why Was It Recognized by UNESCO?
In 2013, the Chagusaba Farming method was honored as a UNESCO Globally Important Agricultural Heritage System. This recognition is not just about tea production but also about the broader ecological and cultural significance of this method. It demonstrates how traditional agricultural practices can be sustainable and beneficial for both humans and nature.
A Shizuoka Treasure
Shizuoka Prefecture, one of Japan’s most famous tea-producing regions, is where this farming method is most commonly practiced. The tea produced here is known for its vibrant color, rich flavor, and exceptional quality—thanks to the careful balance of nature and tradition.
Sip with Appreciation
Next time you enjoy a cup of Japanese green tea, think about the incredible care and tradition behind it. The Chagusaba Farming method is a beautiful reminder that every leaf carries a story of sustainability, biodiversity, and dedication.
