Tea Depends on Water: Wisdom from a Japanese Proverb

Tea Depends on Water: Wisdom from a Japanese Proverb

Hello everyone, I'm Keko, one of the online staff members.

Today, I’d like to introduce another thought-provoking Japanese saying connected to tea:

"Cha wa mizu ga sen" (茶は水が詮)
This translates to “Tea depends on water.”

At first glance, this might seem like a simple observation, but it carries a much deeper meaning. Just as tea’s flavor is greatly influenced by the quality of the water used, the proverb suggests that the foundation of any outcome lies in the essentials. For tea, water is the key element that brings out the full potential of the leaves.

In life, this can be a reminder that success or happiness often depends on the fundamentals—our mindset, relationships, or even the care we put into seemingly small details. When making tea, choosing the right water temperature or the purity of the water can make a significant difference. Similarly, the attention we give to the basics in our daily lives can profoundly shape our experiences.

For me, this saying inspires mindfulness every time I brew tea. I take time to choose the right temperature based on the tea leaves, whether it’s a delicate Gyokuro that requires cooler water or a robust Hojicha that shines with boiling water. It’s a beautiful reminder that even simple acts can be elevated with care and thoughtfulness.

What are the “essential elements” in your life that you focus on?
Until next time, let’s continue to cherish the essentials—both in tea and in life! 🌸
