How to Enjoy Matcha at Home: A Simple Guide to Preparation

Hello everyone.
This is Keko from the online staff ☺️

Have you ever thought, "I’d love to try whisking matcha at home"?
While enjoying matcha at a tea house feels like a special event, you can actually enjoy it quite easily in your own kitchen with just a few basic tools and a little preparation.
Boiling the water, preparing the bowl, and measuring out a scoop of tea... this ritual creates a quiet moment of peace amidst a busy daily routine.

Today, I’d like to introduce how to start your own "Matcha Time" at home, especially for those who are trying it for the first time.

First, let’s look at the basic tools you will need:
・Matcha
・Chawan (Tea Bowl)
・Chasen (Bamboo Whisk)
・Chashaku (Tea Scoop) or a teaspoon
With these four items, you are ready to whisk your own matcha.

The process is simple: put the matcha in the bowl, add hot water, and whisk with the chasen. However, there is one small step I highly recommend to make your tea truly beautiful.

That step is "Sifting the Matcha."

Because matcha is an extremely fine powder, it can sometimes form tiny clumps due to humidity or static. If you pour hot water directly onto these clumps, they may remain as small lumps, preventing a perfectly smooth texture.

By using a sifter to gently loosen the powder beforehand, the matcha becomes light and airy. This allows it to foam beautifully when whisked, resulting in a significantly smoother mouthfeel.

Once sifted, the matcha looks as soft as a cloud. Put this powder into your bowl, add hot water, and whisk. You will see a fine, creamy froth rise to the surface.

One sip, and the gentle aroma of matcha spreads through your senses, bringing a feeling of deep calm.

"Matcha Time" isn't about doing something difficult or extraordinary; it’s about taking a moment to reset yourself.

In the quiet of the morning.
During a mid-afternoon break.
As a way to prepare yourself before welcoming a guest.

Whisking matcha creates a small "yohaku" (intentional space) in your day.

Recently, many tools have become available that make enjoying matcha at home even easier. For example, a "Matcha Sifter Tin" (Matcha Furui-kan) is very convenient. Simply place the matcha inside and rotate or press to prepare perfectly sifted powder in seconds.

When the preparation becomes just a little easier, the act of whisking matcha feels much closer to your daily life.

Your first "Matcha Time" doesn't have to be perfect or complicated.

Choose a bowl you love, boil the water, and whisk your tea.

Just savoring that one bowl slowly might make your day feel a little kinder.
I hope you’ll try bringing the beauty of matcha into your home.
